ABOUT US
The
Middle Peninsula of Fine Arts Association (MPFAA) is an established association founded in the late 1950s as a Community Partner
of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA), Richmond, Virginia. As one of its first outreach partners, MPFAA was then known
as the Gloucester-Mathews Chapter of VMFA. In the 1990s, it was renamed the Middle Peninsula Fine Arts Association. Through
the years, the Middle Peninsula counties of Gloucester, Mathews, Middlesex, and King and Queen changed from agrarian and waterman
localities to sophisticated, suburban communities of the Hampton Roads. Then as now, the MPFAA art programs have always provided
cultural and social activities for these communities. Some past MPFAA activities have been establishing the first art show
on the Gloucester Courthouse Circle during Historic Garden Week in Virginia in the 1960s, organizing the VMFA theatre safaris,
sponsoring art workshops in local schools and hosting the once famed VMFA Artmobile.
CURRENT ACTIVITIES
Today, the MPFAA still takes advantage of the VMFA's Speakers on the Arts lecture series as well as local art
professionals for its programs. MPFAA meets nine times a year from September to May. Six sessions are dinner meetings, preceded
by a reception and followed by an educational lecture. These lectures are open free to the general public at 8 PM. Three additional sessions
are Galas for members and their guests that feature local artists, writers and musicians. All dinners and receptions require
advance reservations the Sunday before the event. All of the speakers from the VMFA are organized, sponsored, and supported
by the VMFA office of Statewide Partnerships.
OUR MISSION
The Middle Peninsula Fine Arts Association is the premier
arts advocate in our region working to create a stronger community through the VMFA art experience.
